There is a lot of confusion with aspect ratio, frame size and flash presentation that I thought I’d write an article in an attempt to clarify some of the issues. Part of the problem is that there are now wide ranges of video cameras that can shoot either Standard Definition (SD) or High Definition (HD) or both. Also, SD cameras can shoot 16:9 and HD cameras can shoot 4:3.
So, let’s turn these problems into opportunities and get into how to benefit from the new (and old) video formats.
If you are shooting with a DV camera you are “acquiring” in SD. That is to say that your screen aspect ratio is 4:3 and the pixel count is 720(width) x 480(height).
If you happen to have (or are considering) an HDV camera, you will be acquiring in either 1920(w)x1080(h) OR 1280 x 720 and a screen ratio of 16:9.
To further confuse things, these formats do not use square pixels! HD uses 1.2:1 pixel aspect and DV uses .9:1. For this discussion we’ll leave them square for now. (Confused yet? PAL pixel aspect is 1:1.42 – There NOW we’re confused!)

So the project begins. First stop is finding an appropriate (and free) acl that ties into PayPal. I found one that is both free and good! |
